Trailer landing gear, also known as dolly legs or landing legs, is a critical component of semi-trailers and other large trailers. These devices are used to support the front end of the trailer when it is not connected to a truck or tractor. Here's an overview of how trailer landing gear works:
Components of Trailer Landing Gear
1.Legs: Two extendable legs provide stability and support. They are typically made of steel for strength.
2.Foot Pads: At the bottom of the legs are foot pads (or shoes), which distribute the weight and prevent the legs from sinking into soft ground.
3.Crank Handle: Used to manually raise and lower the landing gear.
4.Gearbox: Contains the gears that are turned by the crank handle to extend or retract the legs.
5.Cross Shafts: Connects the two legs, ensuring they operate simultaneously.
6.Sand Shoes: Optional pads or plates that provide a larger surface area for the legs to rest on soft surfaces.
Operation of Trailer Landing Gear
1.Lowering the Legs:
The driver or operator uses the crank handle, which is inserted into the crankshaft on the side of the trailer.
Turning the crank handle engages the gears inside the gearbox, which in turn extends the legs.
The legs extend downward until they make contact with the ground, and the foot pads distribute the trailer's weight.
2.Raising the Legs:
To retract the legs, the operator turns the crank handle in the opposite direction.
This action engages the gears to retract the legs upward.
Once the legs are fully retracted, the trailer is ready to be coupled to a truck or tractor.
Practical Use
When a trailer is parked and not attached to a tractor:
The landing gear supports the trailer's front end, preventing it from tipping forward.
It also makes loading and unloading easier by stabilizing the trailer.
When a tractor is ready to couple with the trailer:
The legs are raised to clear the ground and allow the tractor to connect to the trailer's kingpin.
