3.Check for out-of-roundness: Use a brake drum micrometer to measure the drum's diameter at various points around its circumference. Compare these measurements to determine if the drum is out-of-round. If the diameter varies significantly, the drum may need to be turned or replaced.
4.Inspect drum surface: Inspect the braking surface of the drum for any signs of heat damage, such as blue discoloration or heat cracks. Heat damage can indicate excessive brake heat and may require further investigation or repairs.
5.Inspect mounting surfaces: Check the mounting surfaces of the brake drum for any signs of damage or corrosion. Ensure that the mounting surfaces are clean and free of debris to ensure proper brake drum installation.
6.Inspect drum interior: If possible, remove the brake drum to inspect the interior surfaces. Check for any signs of brake fluid leakage, excessive wear on the brake shoes, or damage to the wheel cylinder or brake hardware.
7.Check for brake shoe contact: Look for even contact between the brake shoes and the drum braking surface. Uneven wear or signs of contact only on one side of the drum may indicate a brake adjustment or brake shoe replacement is needed.
8.Inspect hardware and components: Finally, inspect the brake hardware, such as springs, adjusters, and retaining clips, for any signs of wear, damage, or corrosion. Replace any worn or damaged hardware as needed.
