Removing stuck brake drums can be challenging, but following these steps can help you get them off safely and effectively:
1.Safety First:
Park the vehicle on a flat surface.
Engage the parking brake.
Use wheel chocks to secure the opposite wheels.
Wear safety gloves and goggles.
2.Lift the Vehicle:
Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel slightly before lifting the vehicle.
Use a jack to lift the vehicle and place it securely on jack stands.
Remove the lug nuts completely and take off the wheel.
3.Inspect the Drum:
Look for any retaining screws or clips on the drum. These may need to be removed before you can take off the drum.
4.Release the Parking Brake:
Ensure the parking brake is released. The brake shoes might be holding the drum in place if the parking brake is engaged.
5.Access the Adjuster Wheel:
Look for an access hole on the backing plate of the drum. This hole allows you to reach the brake adjuster.
Use a brake adjustment tool or a flathead screwdriver to turn the adjuster wheel. Turning it will retract the brake shoes away from the drum, making it easier to remove.
6.Remove the Drum:
If the drum is still stuck, gently tap around the drum with a rubber mallet or a hammer. Be careful not to hit too hard, as you could damage the drum.
Try to pull the drum off by hand. Wiggle it back and forth while pulling outward.
7.Use Penetrating Oil:
If the drum is rusted onto the hub, apply penetrating oil around the center where the drum meets the hub. Let it sit for a while to penetrate and loosen the rust.
8.Use a Puller:
If the drum still won't budge, use a drum puller tool. Attach the puller to the drum and tighten it gradually to pull the drum off the hub.
9.Check for Damage:
Once the drum is off, inspect the brake components for wear or damage. Replace any parts as necessary before reassembling.
10.Reassemble:
After servicing the brakes, carefully reassemble everything in reverse order.
Ensure the drum is properly seated and adjust the brakes if necessary.
