Trailer Filter Maintenance Cycles & Tips – Extend Service Life & Cut Costs (Beginner’s Guide)

Proper maintenance of trailer filters can extend their service life, protect core components such as the engine and hydraulic system, reduce breakdowns and lower operation costs. Many owners maintain filters improperly: frequent unnecessary replacement causes waste, while long-term neglect leads to filter failure and equipment faults. This guide summarizes standard maintenance cycles and practical tips for cost-effective filter upkeep.

1. General Maintenance Cycles (Adjust by Manual & Working Conditions)

  • Air Filter: Clean every 6 months, replace every 30,000 km. For dusty mine and construction sites, clean every 3 months and replace every 15,000–20,000 km. Replace immediately if damaged or severely clogged.
  • Fuel Filter: Primary filter replacement every 10,000 km; secondary filter every 20,000 km. Shorten to 8,000–15,000 km with poor fuel quality. Replace if clogged or oil turns turbid, and clean fuel tank impurities.
  • Oil Filter: Replace together with engine oil every 10,000 km or 1 year. Replace at 5,000 km / 3 months for new vehicle first maintenance; shorten to 8,000 km under heavy-load and high-frequency operation.
  • Hydraulic Filter: Inspect every 15,000 km / 6 months, replace every 30,000 km. Inspect in advance if hydraulic system leaks or jitters, or hydraulic oil turns cloudy. Replace the filter together with hydraulic oil to avoid secondary contamination.

2. Practical Tips to Prolong Filter Life

  1. Regular Inspection: Check clogging, water accumulation and leakage during daily maintenance; drain water or replace the filter in time according to the water indicator of diesel fuel filters.
  2. Keep Surroundings Clean: Clean dust and sludge around filter housings, interfaces and mounting seats to prevent impurity ingress.
  3. Standard Installation & Removal: Avoid over-tightening to protect threads and sealing rings; ensure tight sealing. Clean air filters with compressed air from inside out - never wash with water.
  4. Adjust Cycle by Working Conditions: Shorten maintenance intervals for long-distance and rescue trailers. For idle trailers, check filters before storage and start the engine every 3 months to prevent dampness and aging.
