1. Seal lubricating medium
Prevent the leakage of gear oil or grease inside the axle to ensure continuous lubrication of bearings and gears.
2. Prevent pollution
Prevent external impurities (such as sediment, moisture) from entering the interior of the axle to avoid wear or corrosion of mechanical components.
3. Protect bearings
Reduce early bearing failure due to insufficient lubrication or contamination.

A typical axle oil seal consists of the following parts:
1. Metal frame
Usually made of steel or aluminum, it provides structural support and ensures a tight fit between the oil seal and the mounting slot.
2. Elastomer seal lip
Main seal lip: Contact with the rotating shaft to form a dynamic seal.
Secondary seal lip (optional) : auxiliary dust or enhance the sealing effect.
3. Commonly used materials:
Nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) : good oil resistance, suitable for ordinary temperature environment (-40°C~120°C).
Fluororubber (FKM) : high temperature (-20°C~200°C), chemical resistance, suitable for harsh working conditions.
Silicone rubber (VMQ) : resistance to high and low temperatures (-60°C~200°C), but low mechanical strength.
4. Spring
Located on the back of the sealing lip, it enhances the radial pressure of the lip against the shaft and compensates for the sealing performance after wear.
Typical application location of trailer axle oil seal
1. Wheel end oil seal
Installed on the outside of the wheel bearing to prevent leakage of grease and block external contaminants (such as muddy water).
2. Differential oil seal
Located at the connection between the axle and the transmission system, seal the gear oil to avoid leakage.
Precautions for installation and maintenance
1. Install it correctly
Clean shaft surface and oil seal seat before installation to ensure no burrs or impurities.
Use a special tool or guide sleeve to avoid flipping or damage to the seal lip.
Apply grease to seal lip and shaft surfaces to reduce initial friction.
2. Get regular checkups
Check for oil spills or stains around the oil seal, which may indicate a seal failure.
When replacing the oil seal, check the wear condition of the bearing and shaft simultaneously.
3. Environmental adaptability
Choose fluororubber (FKM) oil seals for high temperature or corrosive environments.
In cold areas, silicone rubber (VMQ) or hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR) can be used.
Common failure causes
1. Oil Spill
Seal lip wear, spring failure or shaft surface scratches.
2. Pollutant intrusion
Seal lip aging cracking or improper installation resulting in a loose seal.
3. High temperature aging
The material hardens, cracks and loses elasticity.
4. Mechanical damage
The seal lip is scratched or twisted by the tool during installation.

1. Select the appropriate oil seal specifications according to axle type, axle diameter size and working condition.
