What is the material of the brake drum?
The brake drum should have enough strength, rigidity and heat capacity, match with the friction lining material, and have high
friction coefficient.
There are two types of brake drum: cast and combined. Gray cast iron is often used for casting brake drum, which has the
advantages of easy machining, wear resistance and large heat capacity. In order to prevent the deformation of the brake drum under
load, ribs are usually cast on the outer circumference of the brake drum to strengthen the stiffness and increase the heat
dissipation effect. Accurate calculation of brake drum wall thickness is complex and difficult, so it is often selected according
to experience. The wall thickness of brake drum is 7-12mm for passenger cars and 13-18mm for heavy truck.
