1.A standard brake chamber usually consists of the following main components:

Shell: divided into the front cover (connected with the push rod) and the back cover (connected with the brake mechanism), usually made of steel plate stamping or cast iron, with pressure resistance.

Diaphragm (or piston) : rubber diaphragm (diaphragm type) or metal piston (piston type), which produces displacement after pressure and pushes the push rod.

Push rod: Transfers diaphragm/piston displacement to a brake mechanism (such as a camshaft or brake arm).

Return spring: When the brake is released, the diaphragm/piston and push rod are reset.

Air inlet: connected to the brake line to receive compressed air.

Dust cover: Protects internal components from dust and moisture.

Diaphragm brake chamber:

Simple structure, low cost, suitable for medium and light vehicles.

The rubber diaphragm is easy to age and needs to be replaced regularly.

Piston brake chamber:

Strong durability, greater thrust, often used in heavy commercial vehicles or construction machinery.

High sealing requirements and high manufacturing costs.

 

3.Technical parameter
Effective area: Common 20, 24, 30 square inches, etc., determine the output thrust size (thrust = air pressure × effective area).

Stroke: The maximum displacement of the push rod (usually 50-100mm), which needs to be matched with the brake.

Working pressure: standard range 0.6-1.0MPa (about 6-10bar).

Commercial vehicles: pneumatic braking systems for trucks, buses and trailers.

Construction machinery: loaders, cranes and other heavy equipment.

Rail transit: auxiliary braking system for some rail vehicles.

 

5. Maintenance and faults
Common faults:

Diaphragm rupture (air leakage resulting in insufficient braking force).

The push rod is rusted and stuck.

Spring break (reset failure).

Maintenance points:

Periodically check diaphragm/piston tightness.

Lubricate push rod and moving parts.

Drainage: To prevent the accumulation of water in the gas path from freezing (special attention should be paid in winter).

 

6. Standards and certification
Industry standards (e.g. GB/T 5620-2008 Automotive Brake Chamber Performance Requirements or SAE J1469) are required.

Pass durability, tightness, corrosion resistance and other tests.

 

Working principle

 

The working principle of the standard brake chamber is based on the principle of air compression. When the driver presses down on the brake pedal, the braking system sends compressed air through a pipe to the brake chamber. As the air pressure increases, the diaphragm will move under pressure and push the rod forward. The movement of the push rod acts on the brake, causing the brake to produce braking torque, so as to realize the effective braking of the vehicle.
